Robbie Savage: Yaya Toure the boss in the Manchester derby

Robbie Savage: Yaya Toure the boss in the Manchester derby

In his regular BBC Sport column on football tactics, Robbie Savage goes to the Etihad Stadium to see Manchester City thrash neighbours United in the Manchester derby.
City captain Vincent Kompany said afterwards that the reason for the manner of their win was that victory may have meant more to his side than it did to United.
Their commitment was a big factor, because you don't win a derby without it, but Manuel Pellegrini's team also out-played United in every part of the pitch.
Vincent Kompany battles for the ball with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney
United were terrible without the injured Robin van Persie, but we should not play down how good City were.
Before Sunday they had not impressed me much so far under Manuel Pellegrini and I certainly did not see this result coming but, of all the top teams, it was the best performance I have seen this season.
It is a marker for the rest of the Premier League.

Strong spine and hard-working wingers

Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure were both immense for City against United.
Kompany completely dominated Wayne Rooney for the first hour of the game, while Yaya Toure gave City a platform in midfield to force United back in a way we have not seen happen too often before.
The battle for that area of the park was hugely important and Toure bossed it.
Toure is being used as a defensive midfielder by Pellegrini and you can see from the graphic below showing his touches over the 90 minutes that he mostly patrols the part of the pitch either side of the halfway line.
He has the freedom to get forward too, but he and Fernandinho were given a job to do against United, and they did it.
Man City first-half average positions and Yaya Toure's touches
Pellegrini wants City to play possession football and, in Toure, they have the perfect player to help them do it. He played more passes than any other City player (52) on Sunday and he has played and completed more than anyone else in the Premier League this season too.

City were on top in the middle of the pitch but where they really hurt United was out wide.
Before the game, I thought City's right-winger Jesus Navas would be a real threat against Patrice Evra, and thought that was where a lot of their attacks would come from.
But, similarly, I thought United's right-winger Antonio Valencia would be their dangerman because he was up against Aleksandar Kolarov, who does not always want to defend.
In fact, it was on Valencia and Kolarov's flank where City were most dangerous. Their quicker passing helped force United back and it was their full-backs who were overlapping - especially Kolarov.
It was City's work-rate that was the real difference between the two teams, though, and the first goal was a great example of that.
Navas tracked back and played the ball to Joe Hart. From the goalkeeper's clearance, a poor header by Rio Ferdinand ended up with Nasri.
Nasri did exceptionally well to find Kolarov on the overlap but Valencia did not track Kolarov. He was very, very lazy and poor Chris Smalling was left in two-on-one situations a few times.

Why United were not a threat

The question I am asking about United after the first few games of the season is whether some of their players are good enough
Part of the reason Toure found it so easy was that he did not have to worry about Marouane Fellaini or Michael Carrick running in behind him.
Fellaini and Carrick were more concerned about Toure running on to them, and United had nobody getting into the box.
I did not expect Carrick to try to get forward but Fellaini also sat deep and he did not manage a touch in City's area until the 53rd minute.
Toure and Fernandinho were able to play as sitting midfielders (see City's average-position graphic for the first half, above) because City had won the battles on the flank and were getting people forward, whether it was out wide or centrally, and into the United box.
United did nothing out wide until City were 4-0 up and took their foot off the pedal.
The graphic below shows how far back they were forced during the first 45 minutes, a first half when Fellaini stayed very deep, Danny Welbeck was completely isolated and ineffective up front, and United created nothing - they had one shot, from Valencia, which was a long way off target.
I do not know why United bought Fellaini if they are going to play him in that position because that is not how you get the best out of him.
Man City first-half average positions and Marouane Fellaini's touches over 90 minutes
Against City, they needed him to try to burst forward and get into the box, which he started doing midway through the second half when he was pushed further forward, given a freer role, and actually forced Hart into his first meaningful save (after 68 minutes).
By the end of the game, his average position was a lot higher up the pitch and he had managed more touches in and around the City box (see graphic showing his touches above).
But defensively he struggled too. He did not manage a touch in his own area in the first half either, and lost Toure from the corner that led to City's second goal.
He was also guilty of a lack of communication after letting Sergio Aguero get away from him for City's third goal.
Ferdinand's position was all wrong at the near post when the ball comes across and he does not see Aguero, but there was no communication and, as a midfielder, if you are not passing your man on to your centre-half then you have to stay with him yourself.
Fundamentally, the goal was a defensive nightmare for United, and it summed up their day.

Van Persie a big miss for United

Rooney's performance was the one positive for United boss David Moyes but, now that Van Persie has missed his first Premier League game since moving to Old Trafford in 2011, we can see just how important the Dutchman is to them going forward.
Manchester United striker Robin van Persie
It is the same for Kompany at City: they do not look the same at the back without him to lead or organise them. Even teams with big squads can miss one man more than any other.
But the question I am asking about United after the first few games of the season is whether some of their players are good enough? I have said before now that I don't think they will win the league - games like this one are part of the reason why.
The change that David Moyes made with his side 4-0 down, to bring on Tom Cleverley for Ashley Young, summed up for me how limited United's squad is in midfield. They do not have the quality they need against the top teams.

Robbie Savage: How Man Utd beat Arsenal with so little possession

In his regular BBC Sport column on football tactics, Robbie Savage looks at Manchester United's win over top-of-the-table Arsenal.
It was the sort of game you often get between two of the top teams: tight and tense, rather than open and entertaining - and settled by a goal from a set-piece.
Robin van Persie scores Manchester United's winning goal against Arsenal

The game was low on quality but, on this occasion, that suited United down to the ground.

Man Utd not passing, or keeping possession

Against the Gunners, Manchester United had the least possession (39.87%) and worst passing accuracy (75.87) of any of their Premier League games this season.
United also played their lowest number of passes (344) in any league game at Old Trafford for seven years, since a draw with Chelsea in a top-of-the-table clash in November 2006, when they played 310.
They played over 200 more passes (532) when they last played Arsenal at home in the league, in a 2-1 win in November 2012.
In fact, there have only been seven away league games since the start of the 2006-07 season where United have played fewer passes than they managed on Sunday.
So the question is, how did they still manage to get their most significant win since David Moyes took charge against the most in-form team in the country, who were fresh from beating Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday and had won 14 of their last 15 away games in all competitions?

The changes forced upon Arsenal by the sickness bug that hit their squad played a part. But United boss Moyes got his team selection and tactics spot on.
It was a scrappy game, which is what Moyes wanted. And United scoring first was the key to the game going in the direction he wanted it to. Arsenal are the best counter-attacking team in the country but they could not play the way they wanted to once they were behind.
Sunday's game at Old Trafford started very differently to the way it finished, and it was Robin van Persie's goal that made the difference.
United had 66.4% of possession in the first 10 minutes and 58% after 20 minutes.
But, once van Persie scored after 27 minutes, both teams changed their approach. After that, United were the team playing on the break, and they were happy for Arsenal to have a lot more of the ball. The Gunners had been playing a containing game, but that went out of the window when they needed an equaliser.
By half-time, Arsenal had enjoyed 56% of possession and, in the second half alone, that rose to 64.4%. But the Gunners could not turn that into chances, let alone goals.

Wenger has only started the same set of five players in consecutive Premier League games once - Mathieu Flamini, Jack Wilshere, Serge Gnabry, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey against Stoke and Swansea.
And the only other time the same five midfielders have started more than once together was at Old Trafford. Flamini, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Ozil and Ramsey also played against Crystal Palace last month.
Wenger could not play the same midfield he did when his side beat Liverpool - or Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek - because Tomas Rosicky was ill.
He was able to bring Flamini back into the team instead, and his defensive ability and organising skills might have seemed ideal for a trip to Old Trafford.
The way the game panned out, however, Arsenal needed far more of a creative spark.
They looked unbalanced, with Ramsey forced to play out wide on the right rather than centrally where he has been so effective recently.
Phil Jones (r) worked tirelessly to keep Arsenal quiet
Phil Jones (r) worked tirelessly to keep Arsenal quiet
Ramsey was poor and Ozil, who was playing behind Olivier Giroud, was hardly in the game.
All the play was in front of United, with no penetration behind them. Arsenal did not have anybody running past Giroud until Wilshere came on after an hour.
And the only time Arsenal got behind the United defence was when Wilshere burst forward and Phil Jones ushered the ball out.
With Jones starting in midfield, United's team was perfectly set up to stop Arsenal from playing once they had their lead.
Jones ended the game in defence after Nemanja Vidic was injured, but Tom Cleverley came in and worked very hard to deny Arsenal time and space, as did the rest of the United team - including Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, who both covered a lot of ground.
Arsenal's threat in the second half was restricted to two dangerous crosses into the box from their right-back Bacary Sagna.
United hardly created a lot either but they had the better chances, especially when Chris Smalling headed wide from Van Persie's free-kick.
Neither keeper really had much to do and that suited United just fine.

Man City v Man United: A chastening day for Moyes

Man City v Man United: A chastening day for Moyes

The last time a Manchester United manager was serenaded with such fervour in the heart of Manchester City territory he headed straight home and hid his head beneath a pillow.
Sir Alex Ferguson was the man in question - "a sense of guilt had engulfed me" - and it was after the infamous 5-1 beating handed out by Mel Machin's Manchester City at Maine Road on 23 September 1989.
"Fergie Must Stay" was the refrain that day as he fought through uncertainty on the way to becoming the most decorated manager in Manchester United's history and one of the defining figures of the recent sporting age.
For Ferguson read his successor David Moyes, in retreat in his technical area and hearing City fans echoing his name in sarcastic song around the Etihad as their side turned the Scot's Manchester derby introduction into the stuff of his nightmares.
City were in the process of giving United the most fearful going over as they powered into a 4-0 lead, making the sort of statement their own new manager Manuel Pellegrini had demanded of them.

City deserved to win derby - Moyes
Pellegrini's side had shaken United until they fell apart. Every weakness probed ruthlessly, every ageing leg ran ragged. As the Chilean beamed his delight on the sidelines, Moyes was the portrait of a tortured soul, his bowed head in his hands.
Ferguson had been in charge for nearly three years when he hit that Maine Road nadir, losing 5-1 in 1989. Moyes has only been at Old Trafford a matter of months so the bonus might be that he has got his out of the way early.
But there can be no escaping what a harrowing experience this was for Moyes and a Manchester United side that at times seemed to be playing a different game to Manchester City.
Moyes is hardly at crisis time. This season is in its infancy and a long list of casualties can be produced from those who have written Manchester United off too soon and later had to tuck into double helpings of humble pie.
But Moyes faced three key games in the opening phase of this Premier League season (forget the churlish complaints about the fixture list) as United played Chelsea at Old Trafford and travelled to Liverpool and Manchester City.
United were comfortably held by Chelsea in a dull goalless draw, lost deservedly at Liverpool and were hammered out of sight by City. Tough fixture list or not, that is a very poor return. Victory in one of those games would have increased his stock with United's support as they got used to life without Ferguson - instead he has brought back a single point.
City have form for handing out this sort of beating to United. It was less than two years ago they won 6-1 at Old Trafford, but if anything this was more humbling.

Derby stats

  • Manchester City have scored four or more goals against United three times in the Premier League - more than any other team
  • Six of Manchester United's 13 Premier League titles have seen them win only two of their opening five games
  • Wayne Rooney has now scored 11 goals in Manchester derbies - more than any other player in the fixture's history
While not taking any credit away from City's performance on that day, the landmark win at Old Trafford was a freakish combination of circumstances as United lost Jonny Evans to a red card and conceded a flurry of late goals, and ultimately the title to their neighbours on goal difference, while recklessly chasing the game.
There was no freak element to this result. Indeed, with City 4-0 up after only 50 minutes it looked like they might cruise past six goals, such was the state of disarray they had inflicted on the reigning Premier League champions.
Yes, Moyes was robbed of the brilliant Robin van Persie because of a groin injury but the margins here were not the result of one man's absence. City outclassed United in every single area until they eased up with a four-goal advantage and the task complete.
Pellegrini's City played in the style he described so simply. Get the ball. Keep the ball. Score as many goals as possible.
Moyes had moved out of view into his seat in the dug-out long before the end. He only made occasional appearances as the orders were left to his his assistant Steve Round and coach Phil Neville.
He is unlikely have retreated to his bedroom and sought sanctuary underneath his pillow after driving away from the Etihad. He has too many questions to answer in the coming days.
One of the scars of his record at Everton was his failure to win at Liverpool in 11 years. And yet Everton rarely put up a derby performance as wretched and timid as this one offered up by United in that winless sequence.
United looked laboured when set against vibrant City, with Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure setting the charges for the impressive strike duo of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo.
Play media
'Important' derby win delights Pellegrini
While Nasri and Jesus Navas offered creation, hard work and subtlety from the flanks, United had the hapless pair of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, the latter particularly dreadful.
Young gives the impression he feels he is more than comfortable playing at a club such as Manchester United. The problem is, he is now regularly producing performances that suggest he is not.
When he was finally substituted after 52 minutes it ended his own embarrassment but also demonstrated a hint of desperation on the part of Moyes as he sent on Tom Cleverley. It smacked of mere damage limitation, which was just about his and United's best option at that point.
Marouane Fellaini, part of a two-man holding midfield with Michael Carrick, looked a very poor man's Yaya Toure - which was a major problem for United as Toure was the man in opposition who was ruling that area imperiously.
Carrick was reduced to complete anonymity in a colourless United midfield. For all the window dressing about Fellaini being the midfield signing United wanted, it does not take the trained eye to see that they needed to uncover some genuine world-class creativity. Carrick and Fellaini were simply swatted away by Toure and his cohorts.
In defence, Moyes has relied regularly on Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this season but on Sunday it looked like this had already started to take its toll on the veteran pair. Aguero and Negredo were simply too mobile and slippery for this most enduring of central defensive partnerships to control.
If there was one shining light for United it was Wayne Rooney. Outstanding from first to last, it will have been no consolation to this arch-competitor to score a brilliant late free-kick but it was the very least he deserved from a performance that was an example in how to continue to fight against overwhelming odds.
It is in United's psyche to react in the face of the criticism they and their manager will receive, justifiably, in the coming days but this was a chastening day for Moyes and the champions.
Moyes knew with one glance at the fixture list this would not be an easy introduction to the tough task of succession to Ferguson after 26 years but even he would not have been expecting the beating his team received on Sunday, not simply measured in the scoreline but in passion, invention, imagination and power.
United welcome Liverpool in the Capital One Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Some consider these early rounds as an unwanted intrusion into the calendar of their main players. Moyes and those main players must treat it as their first shot at redemption.

Adnan Januzaj: Manchester United teenager's route to the top

Adnan Januzaj: Manchester United teenager's route to the top

He was the last new name on a Sir Alex Ferguson team sheet at Manchester United and now Adnan Januzaj could be one of the first on his successor's.
Januzaj breathed life into David Moyes' stuttering start as Old Trafford boss with two goals on his full debut as his side came from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 on Saturday.

Januzaj's journey

Adnan Januzaj
  • Born in Brussels to Kosovan-Albanian parents in 1995
  • Joins Anderlecht youth in 2005, and spent six years at club before moving to Manchester United in 2011
  • Januzaj impresses Sir Alex Ferguson at youth level. The Scot calls him a "beautifully balanced player" and gives him a spot on the bench for his final game in charge, against West Brom in May
  • Januzaj scores in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong this summer, before making his competitive debut as a substitute in the 2-0 win against Wigan in the Community Shield
  • Substitute appearances in the Premier League and League Cup follow before he scores twice in his first start, against Sunderland on Saturday
"This is a boy of 18 years old, this isn't a boy who is even 20 or 21. This is a boy who, when I came in, everybody told me about," said Moyes.
While some struggled to pronounce the winger's surname (it is Yan-a-zai) Ferguson knew enough about him to name him as a substitute for his final game in charge, the 5-5 draw against West Brom in May.
The youngster was not used, but it was a sign of recognition for the reserve team's player of the year.
"If Sir Alex puts a young kid on the bench, you know he's got a really good chance. He had been training with the first team, which always tells you he's of the same standard as the lads in the starting 11," former United youth team coach Eric Harrison told BBC Sport.
Januzaj arrived in Manchester in 2011 for a reported fee of nearly £300,000 after six years at Belgian club Anderlecht.
"He is a very gifted footballer and Manchester United noticed that at an early age," said former Belgium goalkeeper Nico Vaesen, who is now a football agent.
"He is well looked after by his father, who took the family over to Manchester with him when Adnan moved to United. It will be his father who has a big say on what country Adnan will end up playing for. "
And that could be quite a dilemma for a player with Albanian and Kosovan parents, who was born in Belgium and now lives in England.
"When he was young, his father always forbade him from going to the national youth teams," said Jean Kinderman, head of youth at Anderlecht.
"He could have played many times for the national under-15s or under-16s but his father focused only on education and Anderlecht."
Januzaj has told of "having the ball at his feet" since the age of five. At Under-12 level he played with youngsters a year older than him.
Manchester United manager David Moyes (left) with Adnan Januzaj
Moyes was made fully aware of Januzaj's precocious talent when he arrived at Old Trafford
While he has been given the squad number of 44 at United, he only ever wore the number 10 shirt at Anderlecht.
"He made a big impression - such a talent you don't see every year," Kinderman told BBC Radio 5 live of the first time he saw the youngster play.
"He stood out because of his technical skills, his protection of the ball, the fact that he is always standing up, that he has a fantastic sense of the game.
"He was physically very, very small when we lost him three seasons ago. Now I see a real athlete - when he left here he was a young boy."
With his contract due to run out at end of the season, and reported interest from rivals Manchester City, Januzaj's future is not guaranteed to be at Old Trafford.
But former United player and manager Wilf McGuiness, whose son Paul now coaches the club's Under-18 side, believes he is in the mould of some club greats.

Team-mates on Januzaj

"He's got so much ability, he's got a great attitude too. He can be anything he wants to be. He's that good, he's got that chance" Michael Carrick
"A lot of the young players who come through are a little bit timid and shy, but he looks comfortable and he's confident in his own ability, which you need to be" Wayne Rooney
"Watching Adnan reminds me of when players like Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards and Eddie Colman were coming through at United," said McGuiness.
"You just know they have huge quality. I've seen him a lot for the reserves and he's always impressed me with his control, movement and skill. He looks good and if he stays at United he will end up going to the very top. I know everyone at Old Trafford is really pleased with him."
Januzaj, who shares his birthday (5 February) with former United players Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, came to Old Trafford as a 16-year-old, and made a positive early impression.
"When he first came over he was as good as we expected, without doubt," added Harrison who, having helped to nurture David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, is well placed to comment.
"With a talent like that you only have to watch him once to realise. His technical ability is absolutely spot on. All the club needed to do was to see what his fitness was like and that was about it really."
It is less than three months since Januzaj headed his first senior goal in United's 5-2 victory over Kitchee in Hong Kong.
Now, just three weeks after his first Premier League appearance, as a substitute against Crystal Palace on 14 September, his talents are one of football's big talking points.
"The first time I saw him was in a youth game and he was outstanding. Then you get excited and realise he's one for the future," said Harrison.

Remember Federico Macheda?

Federico Macheda
Italian striker Federico Macheda was 17 when he made his debut against Aston Villa in 2009 and scored a 90th-minute winner. He then scored a late goal the following week at Sunderland.
He has since scored only three goals for United, though. Last season, he failed to net in a 17-game loan spell at Stuttgart and is now on loan at Championship side Doncaster - scoring three goals in his first five games
"Everybody at the club, including the new manager and the first-team players, know that he is definitely one for the future. He's going to be a big asset to the club.
"I wasn't surprised by his debut, I was expecting it - and I think David Moyes was too. If Moyes is watching him in training alongside players like Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie and he's holding his own then it's a simple equation.
"David won't play him in every game because the pace of the Premier League is frightening. Moyes will nurse him and look after him. He'll put him in, bring him out, put him on the subs' bench etc."
Back in Belgium, where the current national team is blessed with talent such as Vincent Kompany, Christian Benteke and Eden Hazard, there is pride and sadness at Januzaj's new-found status.
"He chose the most difficult project. If he stayed here in Anderlecht he would play today in our first team and it could be a trampoline to Europe," said Kinderman.
"We are proud, of course, but a little disappointed because he left too early."

Manchester United Incar Angel Di Maria

Nani: Manchester United Akan Segera Bangkit
